Power Desk consists of a 4-million name database, integrated with a full- featured word processor and spellchecker. The DOS file manager offers point-and-shoot functions for copy, erase, print, view, and rename. Also featured are change directories, disk format, shell to DOS, lock system, screen blanking, and change system date and time. Other facilities include export and import database files, automatic backup and restore, automatic installation, and user configurable defaults. Users can run other programs from within Power Desk. The company has adopted this phased release strategy because of customer demand for a version of dBASE IV 1.1 without SQL Server connections and the longer, more complex testing process required for the Server Edition. Ashton-Tate will deliver dBASE IV 1.1 prior to the release of dBASE IV 1.1 Server Edition. Although no product delivery dates are being projected for either product, the company acknowledged that in an effort to meet stringent quality standards for dBASE IV 1.1, it will not ship either version in the third quarter. dBASE IV 1.1 Server Edition is for use with the Ashton-Tate/Microsoft SQL Server in local area network environments. Designed for 286- and 386-based systems, this software acts as a front end to the SQL Server, giving multiple personal computer users the ability to access and manipulate data across client-server-based LANs. The development process for the Server Edition was longer than anticipated due to the industry-wide problem of dealing with the DOS memory barriers, the company said. As a result, it was necessary to utilize DOS Extender technology to take advantage of the 286 and 386 capabilities. Additionally, Ashton-Tate has determined that a longer and more rigorous internal and external testing process is required to ensure product quality. Executives from Fortune 1,000 companies average two hours a day on the telephone, 20 percent of which they consider a waste of time, according to a survey conducted by Olsten Services, a supplier of temporary personnel. The desktop units are used to send and receive short, telegram-like messages between offices. If attorneys are away, or don't want to be interrupted, their messages are stored for review later. The messages will automatically include the date and time they were received. Attorneys at both firms also use the system to send multiple messages -- to announce or reschedule meetings, or to request information from one another, for example -- often eliminating the need for staff memos.
